About Unlock PDF

Unlock PDF removes password encryption when you know the current document password. Enter the password and create a new PDF that opens without a password prompt.

Common use cases

Remove a known open password

Create an unlocked copy when you already know the valid password and no longer want a password prompt in your own workflow.

Prepare an encrypted PDF for processing

Unlock a legitimate document before merging, signing, watermarking or using software that cannot accept encrypted input.

Owner-password compatible documents

Supported Standard Security Handler PDFs can accept a valid owner or user password depending on how the document was secured.

How it works

1

Zavilo checks whether the PDF is encrypted and attempts decryption with the supplied password.

2

Common password handlers use the lightweight path first; the compatibility path uses qpdf WebAssembly for supported Standard Security Handler variants.

3

A successful operation writes a new PDF without password encryption while preserving the document content.

Privacy & file handling

The encrypted document remains browser-side

Password processing and PDF decryption are performed in the browser. The PDF and password do not need to be sent to Zavilo as a server-side unlocking request.

Limitations and important notes

  • A valid password is required; Zavilo does not guess or crack unknown passwords.
  • Certificate encryption, DRM and vendor-specific security systems are outside this tool's scope.
  • Damaged or unusual PDFs may fail even with the correct password.
